Seven Figures

Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Ink
Current Location: National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi

This painting by Rabindranath Tagore feels like a half-remembered stage moment caught in fading light. Seven rough, angular figures press into the dark, their shapes broken and overlapping against a dull yellow glow. Some stand stiff, others lean or huddle, as if they’re mid-scene in a play no one has scripted yet. Tagore never trained as a painter, and it shows in the best way—the ink looks poured and scratched rather than carefully drawn. The heavy shadows give everything a quiet tension, like people sharing a space but each locked in their own thoughts. It doesn’t tell a clear story. Instead it leaves you with the feeling of watching strangers whose lives almost touch but never quite meet. That unfinished quality is what stays with me: not polished drama, just the raw weight of human presence.
