Self Portrait of Nikka of Guler

Artist:Nikka
Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Ink
Current Location: Jagdish and Kamla Mittal Museum, Hyderabad.

Nikka inherited his father's revolutionary approach to art: the insistence on direct observation rather than formulaic repetition. Nainsukh was among the first Indian artists to paint candid portraits of himself beside his patron, Raja Balwant Singh of Jasrota. In turning the mirror on himself, Nikka carries forward this rare tradition of self-scrutiny, treating his own face with the same objective dignity, honesty, and absence of idealization that he brought to royal portraits.
