Self-Portrait

Support Type: Canvas
Paint Type: Oil Paint
Current Location: Citibanamex Collection
Location History:According to published accounts, the work was identified through a Catalan auction house in 2022, after which it was acquired by Citibanamex; the National Bank of Mexico. In 2023, it became a central work in the exhibition "Yo, Maria Guadalupe, pintora, vuelvo a casa" ("I, Maria Guadalupe, a painter, am returning home"), held at Foro Valparaiso in Mexico City. The exhibition connected the painting with the historic palace where Moncada had spent part of her childhood.

For many years, the oil-on-canvas masterpiece was mistakenly attributed to the Spanish master Francisco de Goya due to its exceptional technical quality, soft brushstrokes, and subtle color gradations. Its true origin as a self-portrait was confirmed when it was identified by a Catalan auction house in 2022 and subsequently repatried to Mexico by Citibanamex. In the portrait, Moncada y Berrio boldly portrays herself holding a painter's palette and brushes in her hands, asserting her independent identity as a professional artist rather than just an aristocrat. The background also features a classical sculpture, denoting her advanced academic and cultural training.
