Gwon Don-in (1783–1859) also known as Kwon, was a distinguished scholar, painter and calligrapher of the late Joseon Dynasty. Born into the Andong Gwon clan, long known for producing prominent officials and intellectuals, he held significant government posts while also earning a strong reputation for his scholarship and art.
Gwon was deeply engaged in the study of old texts and inscriptions on stone and metal (geumseokhak), a discipline closely tied to the broader Silhak (practical learning) movement. Rather than accepting received textual authority at face value, scholars in this tradition Gwon among them emphasized verifying claims against physical historical evidence like inscriptions, artifacts, and records.
A defining feature of Gwon's life was his close friendship with Kim Jeong-hui (1786–1856), the renowned scholar, calligrapher, and painter also known by his pen names Chusa and Wandang. The two corresponded extensively on scholarship, art, and personal matters, and their surviving letters remain valuable sources for understanding the intellectual and social world of 19th century Joseon literati.
Gwon was himself an accomplished calligrapher, admired for a graceful and distinctive hand. His paintings are rarer than his calligraphic work but reflect the restrained, idea-driven aesthetic favored by scholar painters (muninhwa) of his era, who valued suggestion and moral resonance over technical display.
Much of Gwon written legacy was lost, which limits what is known of his full body of work; surviving letters, paintings, and calligraphic pieces remain important, if incomplete, windows into the culture of the late Joseon period.
A note on attribution Sehando ("Wintry Days", "A Winter Scene") the celebrated ink painting of a modest house flanked by pine and cypress trees, now a Korean National Treasure is the work of Kim Jeong-hui, not Gwon Don-in. Kim painted it in 1844 while in exile on Jeju Island, as a gift to his loyal student and interpreter Yi Sang-jeok, using the evergreen trees to symbolize steadfastness through hardship. Gwon appears in this story only at a remove as part of Kim's circle of correspondents and fellow literati and should not be credited as co-author or contributor to the painting itself.
