The artwork titled as Seated lady by Asit Kumar Haldar is an example of beautiful storytelling and poetry through brushstrokes and finesse. Asit Kumar Haldar was an exceptional artist of Bengal school of art and an astistant of Rabindranath Tagore at Shantiniketan. He was one of the major artists of the Bengal Renaissance. He was highly regarded for his experimentation with different techniques, styles and mediums. From 1911 to 1915 he was an art teacher at shantiniketan. Also being the principal of the Kala Bhavan from 1911 to 1923, he assisted Tagore with cultutral and artistic activities. The above painting is watercolour on paper, where a woman is seated on a ground quiet and in a still posture, with one hand near her face and the other resting on her lap. She is resting, thinking rather than doing anything dramatic. The overall scene suggests silence and intospection and surely solitude. Its rather a moment of emotional pause. The figure is placed slightly off centre, with the tree dominationg the right side, and its branches spreading over across the upper half, creating a strong visual frame. The painting uses subdued greys, soft greens, deep blue and mustard yellow. The contrast between the dark skirt and bright drape drape draws attention to the figure. The contours are clean and controlled, especially in the womans silhouette, jewellery and clothing folds. The omage gives a sense of stillness and inward thought. The painting feels less like a narrative scene and more like an emotional portrait of a woman in contemplation.
