Bhawani Das’s Sea Holly (c. 1780–1810) represents the close relationship between Indian artistic traditions, botanical observation, and colonial scientific interests. The artwork presents the plant as both a natural specimen and an object of artistic beauty. Through the careful depiction of its green leaves, upright stem, and delicate violet flowers, the artist demonstrates remarkable attention to detail and an understanding of the plant’s distinctive structure. The isolated composition against a plain background directs the viewer’s attention towards the plant itself. The controlled watercolour technique, fine outlines, and subtle variations in colour create a sense of realism while preserving the delicacy of the image. Rather than presenting nature as merely decorative, Bhawani Das transforms the plant into a visual record that communicates botanical information through artistic skill.
