Ruth (1885) by Luigi Nono is an evocative depiction of peasant work, which matches the principles of verismo perfectly. An oil painting on canvas, it is inspired by the biblical story of Ruth the Moabite, who modestly gleaned the remains of the wheat harvest in the field in order to provide for herself and her family. Instead of presenting this story in terms of an awe-inspiring, idealistic and dramatic biblical narrative with divine interventions, Nono places it in the harsh and sun-scorched terrain of Veneto or Friuli. The academic aspects of the painting have been completely stripped off in order to present the viewer with a touching scene of human fortitude. In terms of spatial elements, the composition makes the viewer very close to the efforts involved in farming. The first element at the foreground level in the composition is the figure of a young peasant girl, which depicts the biblical figure, kneeling down in an expansive region amid a series of orderly wheat stalks that have been cut. The modest clothes worn by the figure, the tight hair, and the dark tanned skin show her intimate connection with nature; also, her being absorbed in her work indicates her full involvement in the task. Behind her figure, the composition expands into an expansive landscape where other rural girls are involved in farming amid hay bales. There is no question that the Nono’s artwork could be possible due to the application of the lyrical naturalistic color palette that perfectly conveys the real mood of the working summer day. Indeed, there is some light that illuminates the dried land with the golden ochre glow and makes the whole picture glowing with heat. In Nono’s painting, the artist uses not the clear academic lines but the soft brush strokes that perfectly combine the texture of wicker baskets, dirt and fabric into the picture that is illuminated with the light.
The artwork captures the essence of hyper realism, an essential character of Verism. It makes a courageous attempt to shed the divine embellishments of Ruth's biblical description and instead presents a rather honest image, attributed by the realities of peasant life. The farmlands are beautifully adorned by this golden glow, representative of both the scorching sun and hardship, and at the same time fortitude and abundance.
