Rustam's seventh course: He kills the White Div

Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Mixed Media
Current Location: Cleveland Museum of Art, Ohio, United States

Held within columns of graceful Nastaʻlīq calligraphy and sumptuously illuminated margins, the composition is a brilliant synthesis of raw dramatic tension and decorative splendour. A subterranean struggle is enclosed by swirling, multi-hued mountain crags of delicate lavenders, blues, and golds, creating a sense of contained claustrophobia. Rustam’s strike is made more decisive by the glowing skin tones and rich textiles. Ancillary figures and a saddled horse await patiently outside. The painting is a masterpiece of Persian miniature art, with its fine brushwork, bright palette and narrative intensity.
