"Rustam Brings the Div King to Kai Kavus for Execution" is a celebrated miniature from the Shah Tahmasp Shahnama, produced in Iran around 1525–1530. The manuscript illustrates the Shahnama of Abu’l Qasim Firdausi, and the painting is attributed to Mir Musavvir and Qasim ibn ‘Ali. It depicts a dramatic episode from the story of Rustam and the Div King of Mazandaran. Despite the defeat of the White Div and the Div general Arzhang, the demons continue to threaten the Iranian forces. Kai Kavus therefore leads his army against them. Rustam captures the Div King, who attempts to escape by transforming himself into stone. He is eventually brought before Kai Kavus, where Rustam threatens to cut him apart; the Div then resumes his true form and is executed on the king’s command.
The composition presents the episode as a highly organised yet dynamic courtly spectacle. Kai Kavus occupies the richly decorated pavilion on the left, seated upon his throne and surrounded by attendants. Rustam stands prominently before him, holding the captured Div King, while soldiers, horsemen and standard-bearers occupy the surrounding landscape. The unusual arrangement of figures across the rocky terrain creates a strong sense of movement and narrative progression. The brightly coloured costumes, patterned tent, elaborate textiles and numerous banners demonstrate the refined decorative vocabulary of Safavid manuscript painting.
Mir Musavvir’s skill is particularly evident in the delicate drawing of human figures, expressive gestures and careful arrangement of multiple characters within a restricted pictorial space. The rocky landscape, flowering plants and stylised clouds further contribute to the ornamental character of the miniature. The Persian text panels frame the image and integrate the visual narrative with Firdausi’s epic poetry. A later hand has blackened the face and hands of Kai Kavus, altering the original appearance of the ruler. Overall, the miniature combines heroic narrative, courtly splendour and intricate Safavid artistic refinement, making it an important example of the visual culture of the Shah Tahmasp Shahnama.
The painting is a detailed piece of work which talks about a significant event of history. Each and every character and person in the painting is detailed in a certain way.
