Ritratto della figlia Irene (Portrait of daughter Irene)

Support Type: Canvas
Paint Type: Oil Paint
Current Location: Galleria Nazionale d\'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, Roma, Italia

The painting portrays little Irene Tallone (1889 - 1905), the first of the artist's eight children. It was executed in Bergamo, where Cesare Tallone taught painting from 1884 to 1898. The bibliography dates the work to 1897, the same year it was presented at the second Venice Biennale: the dating can also be confirmed by taking into account the physiognomy of the sitter, probably portrayed at the age of eight wearing her first communion dress. The success of the portrait was immediate, so much so that it pushed the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna to purchase it, already in 1897, for its own collections. Cesare Tallone, during his successful career as a portraitist, also executed several portraits of his family: little Irene, in particular, was the muse who inspired some successful works of an intimate flavour, including "The daughter Irene with the Flowers" or "Flower Girl in the Grass" (1897, repr. in Cesare Tallone: ritratti e paesaggi, Lovere, 1996, p. 35), "Portrait of Irene" (1898-99, Municipality of Bergamo. Repr. in Bianchi M. - Palma C., Cesare Tallone 1853-1919, Tesserete, 2008, n. 12).
