Painted in France in 1841. However in 19-20th century, it has been circulated in the art Market and was exhibited in Didier Aaron Gallery. Recent reports say, it has been bought into a private collection, dating near 2024.
Return from the Fields or Portrait of a Young Boy holding Bouquet of Flowers is a 19th century painting made by Thomas Couture. It was created on canvas by Oil paints in 1841. It is one of the many portraits done by Thomas Couture in his era where he focused on techniques of the impressionists before it was even in existence as an era. In the painting we can see a young boy looking right side upward, his face brightly lit with shadows showing the direction of the light. We can also see him holding a green bushy bouquet of flowers, in a dark tone which clearly shows the tonal contrast which Thomas Couture used a lot in his painting methods. The dark green foreground is balanced with the subject, with the light sky background. We can see him using the technique of ébauche painting, where he directly painted with bold strokes over the under-tinted dark brown or pigmented colour to sketch the figure. This shows the boy's shirt with bright bold strokes of white, showing the technique of premier coup, a method where bold, quick and thick layer of paint is applied without too much blending to show a bright overall tone, as seen in the boy's face and shirt. While his contemporary artists referred to "licked", clean finishes in a painting, Thomas Couture preferred to keep rough painting that was initially mapped out on the canvas to stay. This showed the expressive, bold moves of the artist, holding the essence of his expression and impression. The background clearly shows a blurry landscape, holding this value true. The painting is beautifully balanced out by dark as well as bright tones with a bold vigorous painting technique used by him. This painting also has a verso painting in its backside where an interior studio sketch can be seen, which can be interpreted as this painting as his work between main commissions. As the artist is seen to be torn between the past and the present contemporary movement, this painting shows, he had showed managed to delve into his techniques for a living as well to show a new path to his students, where expressionism was the key to art.
