Resurrezione di Lazzaro

The painting Raising of Lazarus by Alessandro Magnasco (1667–1749) is related to the biblical episode from the Gospel of John (New Testament), which narrates the miracle performed by Christ through which Lazarus was resurrected after he had been dead for four days. The painting was done with the collaboration of Alessandro Magnasco and Clemente Spera (who collaborated often in the creation of paintings of this type). The figures were painted by Magnasco, whereas the architectural setup of Classical ruins was done by Clemente Spera.Christ is shown standing amongst the Classical ruins, the ruins providing a dramatic effect to the painting. The divinity of Christ is marked by his blue robe, a colour which is associated with divinity in Western art traditions. There are people around Christ and Lazarus. Some are shown as pulling Lazarus out of his tomb, while others are watching the miracle with amazement. The artist has used loose and energetic brushwork, also seen in his other creative works, to create expressive tension and drama.
