Rang Panchami

Support Type: Canvas
Paint Type: Oil Paint
Current Location: Bhavani Museum, Aundh

Baburao Painter’s Rang Panchami captures the lively atmosphere of the festival of colours celebrated five days after Holi. The central figure is a young woman in a flowing white sari, raising its loose end above her head as the fabric spreads dramatically through the air. Beside her, a young boy holds a pichkari, reinforcing the playful nature of the celebration. Other figures, vessels and containers suggest the throwing and spraying of coloured water. Painter combines academic realism with an Indian festive setting, giving the woman an elegant, almost sculptural appearance. The flowing drapery and movement create a sense of energy while the traditional clothing and rural surroundings connect the scene to Maharashtrian life.
