Rang Panchami

Support Type: Canvas
Paint Type: Oil Paint
Current Location: Bhavani Museum, Aundh

Baburao Painter’s Rang Panchami is an oil-on-canvas painting depicting the festive atmosphere of Rang Panchami, the celebration of colours observed five days after Holi, particularly associated with Maharashtra and parts of central India. The work is listed under this title in the art documentation of Painter’s paintings, although its precise date is not recorded. The composition centres on a young woman in a flowing white sari, caught in a moment of movement. Her raised arm lifts the loose end of her sari above her head, causing the translucent fabric to spread dramatically behind her like a colourful festival flag. Beside her stands a young boy holding what appears to be a pichkari, immediately establishing the playful character of the scene. Around them, several figures participate in activities associated with the celebration, while vessels and containers scattered across the foreground suggest the use of water and colours. The arrangement creates a lively contrast between the poised central woman and the animated background. Painter gives the central figure an almost sculptural elegance. Her elongated posture, carefully modelled body, delicate facial expression and flowing drapery demonstrate his interest in academic realism and idealised human form. At the same time, the rural setting, traditional clothing, water vessels and communal celebration ground the painting firmly in an Indian social context. The title is particularly significant because Rang Panchami is a festival of colour, associated with the arrival of spring and the playful throwing and spraying of coloured water. Painter transforms this popular festive activity into a carefully composed pictorial scene. His work is therefore characteristic of his wider practice of combining Western academic techniques with subjects drawn from Maharashtrian life and culture. Contemporary accounts of Kolhapuri art also identify Ranga Panchami among his notable paintings.
