This piece titled ' Pururavas ' by Kshitindranath Majumdar is a depiction of a myth . Pururavas fell in love with the celestial apsara , Urvashi . This tale is borrowed from the epic Mahabharata . Pururavas was the ancestor of the Yadavas , the Pandavas and the Kauravas . A king of the lunar dynasty or Chandravansh , this painting depicts a royal figure in quite an unconventional manner . The tragic love story of Pururavas and Urvashi is portrayed deftly in this painting . The monochromatic foreground of the painting is quite dark in tone . The dark green hue is a reflection of the attachment towards nature during the times during the Mahabharata .
Urvashi set a few conditions before King Pururavas . While the couple were making love , Indra had started to miss his apsara and had her pet sheeps stolen . Pururavas was left heartbroken owing to their incomplete union . The expression of Pururavas in the painting is that of extreme distress . His lovelorn , pensive face is full of unkempt facial hair . The king is depicted in quite simpler garments . The juxtaposition of simple garments on a royal figure shows how love left him crestfallen . The King is seen seated near a tree , almost holding onto certain parts of the tree, probably its branches .
Painted by Khitindranath Mazumdar in 1914, the artwork Purūravas depicts Purūravas, a character in Puranic literature, a king who reigned over the race of Dīptākṣa. A celebrated ruler of the Candravaṁsa dynasty, Purūravas is described to be a brilliant and pious individual. In Purūravas’ story, he falls in love with and marries the nymph Uravaśī, yet their marriage was sabotaged and the king was cursed to go insane from being separated from his wife.
Mazumdar’s painting captures Purūravas’ devastation during that period of separation, portraying the king in an unkempt state and dishevelled clothes as he stares off into the distance. Seated on the ground while holding a drooping tree, the king dons a solemn and melancholic expression, reinforcing the painting’s theme of longing.
