The painting shows a lively and interesting scene of royal entertainment in eighteenth-century North India In the foreground, a group of princes and court members are sitting comfortably under large trees and watching two young boys performing a dance. The boys are placed near the centre of the painting, so our attention naturally goes towards them. Around them, musicians and singers are playing and performing, creating the feeling of a joyful court gathering. The people are sitting on a beautifully decorated carpet, surrounded by colourful textiles and carefully arranged flower beds. The large trees on both sides make the scene look peaceful and also act like a natural frame around the main group. Their thick green leaves provide shade and give the painting a strong connection with nature.Behind the gathering, a river can be seen separating the people in the foreground from the buildings on the opposite bank. A small boat is travelling on the river, adding movement to the otherwise peaceful landscape. On the other side of the river, British sepoys are visible. Their presence is important because it shows the growing influence of the British in North India during this period. The building in the background has been suggested as possibly the Lal Bagh at Faizabad.Another interesting detail is the elephant with an empty howdah and a palanquin near the river. These objects may have been gifts presented to Lord Clive, who visited Lucknow in 1764. This makes the painting more than just a scene of entertainment. It also gives us a glimpse of the political changes taking place at the time.
