Prince Khurram Attacking a Lion

Artist:Balchand
Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Watercolor
Current Location: Royal Collection, Windsor Castle, United Kingdom
Location History:“The painting is part of the Windsor Padshahnama, a manuscript commissioned by Emperor Shah Jahan. It is currently preserved in the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle, United Kingdom.”

What I find compelling is the way the painting renders Prince Khurram's courage as almost sacred, that a gold halo doesn't just indicate royalty, it makes the act seem predestined, heroic. The people on the ridge are calm and cool, witnesses of the making of a legend, not a frenzied hunt. It is less a documentary and more a valorous propaganda, the kind of image that Mughal ateliers relished, building the myth of the future emperor one brush stroke at a time.
