Miskin’s Prince Salim Resting after a Hunt is a remarkable example of Mughal nim qalam painting, distinguished by delicate ink drawing and restrained washes of colour. The composition presents Prince Salim, the future Jahangir, pausing in a rocky landscape beside his horse, while a dead or dying Saluki introduces an unsettling note into the otherwise tranquil scene. The overturned water bowl adds ambiguity, leaving the circumstances of the animal’s death open to interpretation. Miskin’s exceptional observational skill is evident in the naturalistic rendering of animals, the varied postures of human figures and the intricate landscape. Smaller episodes, including European scholars, ascetics and attendants, enrich the narrative and suggest the cosmopolitan character of Akbar’s court. The restrained palette directs attention towards line, movement and expression. Beyond its hunting imagery, the painting invites reflection on power, cruelty and compassion, demonstrating how Mughal artists transformed everyday incidents into psychologically suggestive visual narratives.
