Originally compiled within the historical Shah Jahan Album (combining Mughal paintings from the reigns of Jahangir and Shah Jahan with classical Persian calligraphy), acquired by the museum in 1955 through purchase using the Rogers Fund and The Kevorkian Foundation Gift.
So, I came across this piece from around 1610 during the peak of the Mughal era called the "Portrait of Zamana Beg, Mahabat Khan". It's basically a killer portrait by this artist Manohar Das. They used ink, some opaque watercolor, and a bit of gold on paper, which really shows off how crazy talented the folks in the royal workshops were back then. The guy in the painting, Zamana Beg (most people call him Mahabat Khan), was a major bigwig, general, and noble whose influence lasted through multiple emperors like Akbar, Jahangir, and Shah Jahan.
Instead of looking stiff like a lot of old court paintings do, Manohar Das actually managed to give him some real personality and depth. He's just standing there against a soft background in these nicely layered clothes where you can actually see all the fabric folds. The artist's attention to detail is wild—especially with the sharp outlines of the face, the neatly trimmed facial hair, and the way he's standing so proudly. Also, this painting is actually part of that famous Shah Jahan Album, which basically put together cool Mughal art and super old Persian calligraphy. If you look at the borders around the portrait, there are these super detailed flowers drawn in profile, which became a huge trend after Jahangir took a trip to Kashmir. Honestly, it's a pretty dope piece that captures one of the most powerful guys from that time period.
