The artwork depicts Pasqualina Cervone, a pupil of Giovanni Fattori and Spadini's fiancée from 1906, whom he married in 1908: the artist devoted many works to his companion, who became his regular model. The scene is set within a confined interior space: the protagonist is seated close to a corner where two walls meet.
