Portrait of Suraj Singh Rathor is an early 17th-century Mughal miniature attributed to Bishandas, one of the accomplished portrait painters of the Mughal court. Dated to around 1600, it depicts Suraj Singh Rathor, Raja of Marwar and maternal uncle of Prince Khurram, the future emperor Shah Jahan. The portrait presents Suraj Singh in strict profile, standing against a restrained pale-green background. His upright posture, folded hands and richly decorated costume establish his aristocratic status. Particularly striking is the translucent white muslin garment, through which the colours of the trousers beneath remain visible. The detailed rendering of textiles, sash, jewellery and cap demonstrates the Mughal fascination with material richness and precise observation.
