Portrait of Murad Bakhsh (1624–61)

Artist:Balchand
Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Tempera
Current Location: Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, Ohio, USA
Location History:Originally a portrait jewel, the painting later became part of an album page. It passed through several private collections before being gifted to the Cleveland Museum of Art in 2013.

It is a 17th-century Mughal miniature painting attributed to the master court artist Balchand, created around 1635 during the reign of Emperor Shah Jahan. Originally, it was in a gemstone setting as a “portrait jewel” to be worn by family and supporters at court. It is made from gum tempera and gold on paper which makes it much more valuable and beautiful. Its intricate designs, and the detailing of the facial expressions is key characteristic of Balchand's paintings which can be clearly seen in the above potrait. His attention to detail and beautifying the background but still grabbing the viewer's attention to the center of the painting is a classic Balchand feature which is very prominent above.
