Portraits in the Salon tradition dominated the art world of the late 19th century with their highly finished and idealised styles of royal or bourgeois patronage. Carlous-Duran was one of the leading society portraitists, combining the emerging approach of Impressionism and the prestigious academic realism of Salon art. Marie-Anne was Carolus-Duran’s daughter, here she is aged four and the central focus of this full-length portrait. She is painted with monumentality, the composition and poise resembles an adult portrait, overflowing with authority and prominence. Marie-Anne is stiff and poised, not childlike at all; she is status-bearing. The scale and pose suggests her social identity within the bourgeoise society of France; the portrait is projection of her potential. Her emotion is controlled and the composition is relaxed, yet stately, structured, and public.
