Portrait of a Lady

Support Type: Canvas
Paint Type: Oil Paint
Current Location: National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), New Delhi

One of the finest work of Raja Ravi Varma, whose signature style was a combination of European academic realism with Indian aesthetics. Born into an aristocratic family, he was a self taught artist and often called the "father of modern Indian art". His paintings are known for realistic anatomy and facial expressions, richly detailed textiles and jewellery. In traditional Indian art, women were often idealized symbolically but Ravi Varma individualized them. Instead of portraying the lady as a passive decorative object, she is occupying space with confidence which reflects the emergence of educated and socially visible elite women from aristocratic families during the colonial period.
