Bhawani Das’s Pink Headed Duck is a fine example of late eighteenth-century Company School natural-history painting. Executed in watercolour and gouache on European paper, the work depicts the now-extinct pink-headed duck in almost life-size profile. The bird is presented against a completely plain, pale background, allowing the viewer to concentrate entirely on its physical characteristics. Its dark chocolate-brown body is rendered with delicate repetitive strokes that suggest the texture of feathers, while the distinctive pinkish-red head and long pale bill are carefully differentiated. The webbed feet, layered wings, and individual feathers are similarly observed with remarkable precision.
The painting belonged to the celebrated Impey Album commissioned by Lady Mary Impey, who maintained a menagerie and aviary at her residence in Calcutta. Bhawani Das, a painter from Patna trained in the Mughal tradition, was one of three Indian artists employed to document the Impeys’ collection.
The work is particularly significant because it records a species that later became extinct. The painting may even have contributed to the bird’s early scientific identification by John Latham. Thus, it occupies an important space between Mughal naturalism, European scientific illustration, and colonial knowledge-making. Rather than merely portraying a bird, Bhawani Das’s meticulous observation preserves a visual record of a species that can no longer be encountered in the wild.
The Pink-headed Duck is portrayed as a striking symbol of beauty and rarity. Its distinctive pink head contrasts with the darker body, creating visual harmony and elegance. The artwork captures the bird’s delicate appearance while evoking themes of nature, uniqueness and fragility. It also reminds us of the importance of preserving endangered wildlife.
