Titled Per Ottanta Centesimi! (For Eighty Cents!), Angelo Morbelli’s painting shows rice weeders in the rice field of Vercelli. With their feet submerged in the shallow water, the workers are bent down and hard at work. Despite the strenuous nature of their labour, the title of the painting reveals how little they’re paid. This artwork was painted during a period of labour and peasant protests in Italy – labourers, including rice weeders, protested against unhealthy working conditions, as well as the lack of pension fund and working hours. In this context, Morbelli’s painting serves as a piece of social criticism for how arduous work and gruelling working conditions are met with disproportionately low pay. https://www.analisidellopera.it/per-ottanta-centesimi-di-angelo-morbelli/
