Cristiano Banti’s Peasant Girl Feeding a Duck (1871) has a certain charm that lies in its very lack of activity. Outside there is only a young peasant girl, engaged in the small, unnoticeable work of feeding a duck. And maybe that's the point. It's the kind of moment most of us walk past every day without a second thought, but Banti stopped, looked and decided it was worth painting. She doesn't appear to know that anyone is looking at her. There is no pose, no arrangement for effect, the whole thing seems almost accidental, as if we had merely wandered by and caught her going about her afternoon. There is something quietly tender in the way she and the duck seem to co-exist in that little exchange. No drama, no big scene, no hero at the center of it all. Just a girl who in most of the academic painting of that time, would have never been thought important enough to paint. Her environment is quite simple, which is an advantage for the picture. The moment feels more intimate, more personal, as if you are witnessing a memory rather than a formal work of art. That’s what the small scale of the painting helps to create. All of this is in keeping with the aims of the Macchiaioli, the group to which Banti belonged, who were trying to move away from grand historical scenes and focus instead on ordinary, everyday life. And that is what makes the painting stay with you. It does not try to make rural life seem prettier or more meaningful than it is. It just quietly sees a girl feeding a duck, sees something real, and believes that this little, everyday moment is just as important as anything greater.
