Pallas and the Centaur

Support Type: Canvas
Paint Type: Tempera
Current Location: Gallerie degli Uffizi

The identity of the woman in this artwork has not been established though she is considered to be Minerva, the Goddess of knowledge and war. The centaur, half man and half beast represents uncontrolled passion, lust and sensuality. Thus, his submissive position represents submission of passion to chastity and reason. Art during this time flourished with the support of patrons. Minerva's dress is decorated with the three ring insignia which was a symbol of the Medici family. This probably indicates that they were his patrons.
