Opium Eater

Support Type: Wood Panel
Paint Type: Oil Paint
Current Location: Not publicly documented
Location History:The painting was created in 1908 by Pestonji Bomanji. Its later ownership history is not fully documented in the available sources. It was recorded as Lot 66 at the Osian's India: The Passionate Detachment auction held in Mumbai on 24 February 2001, where it received a winning bid of ₹425,000. The present location and ownership after the 2001 auction have not been publicly disclosed.

Executed with psychological realism, the painting captures a male figure in a three-quarter profile against a muted, atmospheric background. Ivanov utilizes a warm, earthy color palette, employing soft chiaroscuro to model the contours of the man's face, prominent nose, and downcast eyes. The subject’s long, dark hair and full beard are rendered with rich texture, while a simple tunic and thin necklace convey a sense of ascetic humility, evoking deep introspection and spiritual solemnity.
