On the boulevard vladimir makovskys masterpiece powerfully depicts the societal and emotional disruption due to urbanization and the influx of people coming into russia in the late 19th century. the painting takes place on a rainy moscow boulevard during the late autumn. the focus is two young adults sitting on a bench whose vast emotional divide defines the paintings essence. in the lower portion of the painting the young woman is sitting and has made the journey from her village to visit her husband. the young woman is wearing a traditional shawl for warmth and is enclosing within her arms an infant tightly wrapped and bundled. the peasant woman looks despairingly tired and alienated from her husband she stares blankly at the area before her and realizes her husband does not resemble the man she married. beside the peasant woman is her husband who is a young man accustomed to the working class however he hasnt improved his circumstances. the young man is drunk and is sitting in a very sloppy manner and is playing a small hand accordion with no concern for either of the women. his face is glazed over and he sits in a very indifferent manner. all of these characteristics depict the emotional distance that the young couple now have from one another. makovsky uses the background of the painting to emphasize this emotional distance the viewer sees the emotional gauntness of the waste littered streets and the grey sky that impact the individuals that have been affected by societys move toward urban living
