Nushirvan and the Owls

Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Gouache
Current Location: British Library, London

A Persian painting with bold colours Nushirvan and the Owls is how it packages a deep lesson on political justice into such a stunning landscape. The detailed brushing with dark colours, architecture ruined, animals, human figure show perfectly. The main thing about this painting, that most people miss is that the artist, Mir Musavvir, actually hid his signature and the date (1539–40) directly into the architecture—disguised inside a tiny verse couplet on the ruined palace wall. The way decay is drawn as something beautiful and flat is just brilliant.
