As one of the four masters of Anhui , Zha Shibiao earned acclaim for his sparse, elegant and contemplative landscapes . His distinctive aesthetic thoughts heavily reflects the cool detached and minimalist spirit of the renowned Yuan dynasty master Ni Zan .In mountains at dawn the delicate calligraphy inscribed on the artwork conveys a poetic narrative of a man rising early in the morning to admire towering mountain peaks and winding waters half-shrouded in gentle mist . Nestled within this serene environment is a solitary recluse who has cast aside all mundane societal cares content with a simple fishing boat serving as his floating dwelling. The artists signature of 'old man of plum valley' reinforces the historical reality that Zha Shibiao considered himself a true secluded man Yishi . Following the collapse of the Ming dynasty he chose a life of quiet retreat over public service . Effectively he redirected his political loyalties away from the newly established Qing dynasty. Instead he concentrated toward artistic self-expression which is rendered meticulously using traditional ink on paper. The audience could also notice through this painting that his evocative composition exemplifies the scholarly ideal of finding solace, spiritual freedom, personal identity and deep unshaken admiration of nature within the quiet sanctuary of the natural world.
