Mother & Child

Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Watercolor
Current Location: Great Banyan Art, New Delhi

The mother is almost wholly dark, drawn in quick, heavy strokes of grey and black. She sits in profile, turned toward the child, who is painted in warm yellow ochre and seems to lean into her side. The contrast between the two figures is the painting's centre. The mother is shadowed and solid, while the child glows, as though the bond between them is the only light in the scene. Around them, loose washes of yellow, green, and blue suggest foliage and flowers, but the forms dissolve into the paper. Baij doesn't outline the figures carefully; he lets the washes carry the tenderness, so the moment reads as a fleeting domestic gesture rather than a posed portrait.
