Monochromatic Kohbar (The Sacrificial Marriage Mandala)

Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Natural Dye
Current Location: Madhubani District, Mithila Region, Bihar, India.
Location History:While a Kohbar is historically drafted as a temporary wall mural inside the Kohbar Ghar (the nuptial chamber of a bride's home), modern configurations like the one shown are painted on portable substrates. This allows the deeply symbolic, localized folk customs of rural Bihar to be preserved and displayed in contemporary art galleries and international exhibitions globally.

Kohbar paintings are one of its own kind which is not seen in any other artwork. Some may come close to it, but never quite like it. It is intentionally symmetrical so as to have a hypnotic and captivating effect on the viewer.
