In the late 19th and early 20th centuries in Maharashtra, a versatile artist known as Baburao Painter spent his formative years developing a film camera and working as a painter of stage backdrops along with his cousin Anandrao. His lack of formal education did not hinder his artistic career; rather, he taught himself to paint and founded Maharashtra Film Company in 1917. His first film was a silent movie called ‘Sairandhri’ in 1920. His expertise in stage backdrops led him to introduce two-dimensional painted backdrops to provide a more realistic and dynamic visual quality. It is evident in this portrait of Mohan Lal, a Gujarati stage actor. Mohan Lal gave his first performance at the tender age of 7 years and was trained under Shri Prabhulal Trivedi and Shri Daya Shankar Vasanji. His achievements led him to open his own drama company. The background of the portrait perfectly depicts Baburao’s use of a two-dimensional effect, which was relatively uncommon. It is also representative of Baburao’s influence from European paintings, as he has tried to locate the character in a defined setting rather than as an isolated figure in the painting. Hence, the portrait combines romanticised representation with the theatrical sensibility characteristic of his artistic practice.
