Mirza Ghazi

Manohar Das Yadav, Manohar or Manuhar was a painter under the reign of the Mughal emperor Akbar and later in the reign of Jahangir. He was famous for his portraits of imperial family and court life. He was the son of one the legendary painter, Basawan under Akbar's court. He learned the art of painting from his father. Mirza Ghazi painted by Manohar Das under the reign of Jahangir is one of the example of his skills of painting court life. Mirza Jhani who was the ruler of the Tarkhan dyansty of Sindh submitted to Akbar while his son Mirza Ghazi Beg, subahdar of Thatta was loyal supporter of Jahangir and helped him in major expeditions. He was also a poet whom Jahangir admired. This portrait of Mirza Ghazi was copied from that of Jahangir in garden. Painting is done on paper by using water colours along with gold. Mirza Ghazi is seen wearing a brigh pink Jama (on top) and blue Paijama ( bottom) with rose in his hand while his head is tilted. And there is also green background suggesting the garden. The borders are inscribed in Persian are surrounded by gold painting and floral border. The inscription on the lower border, "shabih-e Mirzi Ghazi pesar-e Mirza Jani amal-e manohar" meaning, "Likeness of Mirza Ghazi, the son of Mirza Jani, the work of Manohar" shows that he was greatly admired by the emperor Jahangir
