Maestà

Simone Martini, who was born in Siena, was a Gothic painter.Because of this, he was naturally attracted to depicting naturalistic scenes from the New Testament.Martini was considered a genius of his time.His artistic style differed from the contemporary Florentine art because his works were characterized by softness and decorative elements. The Maestà is a large fresco located in the Palazzo Pubblico in Siena. It was painted by Martini along with his assistants.It is believed that they worked within the circle of Duccio di Buoninsegna.The Maestà portrays the Virgin Mary seated on a throne with baby Jesus on her lap.Jesus is shown blessing the viewers with his right hand and holding a manuscript with his left.Interestingly, this scroll was created by gluing real paper to the wall.Angels and saints surround the central figures in a prayer-like manner.Notable figures such as Saint Paul, Archangel Gabriel, Archangel Michael, and San Pietro can be identified.The throne is richly decorated with gold embellishments.Opaque, golden halos adorn the heads of the figures.This is likely due to Martini making several retouches on the painting in the future.The manuscript held by baby Christ contains the Latin words, "Love justice, you that are the judges of the earth." This message is appropriate for the government palace where the painting is displayed.
