Giulio Romano’s *Madonna della Gatta* (1522–23) is a luminous testament to his gifts as one of Mannerism’s earliest and most inventive masters. Trained under Raphael and later court artist to the Gonzaga, Romano here transforms the classical pyramidal arrangement of Leonardo and Raphael into something freshly alive. The Virgin, Christ Child, young Baptist and Saint Elizabeth form a graceful, harmonious group whose subtle emotional exchanges and elegant contours still carry High Renaissance poise, yet already hint at the more dynamic, inventive spirit that would define his later work. The humble domestic cat in the foreground, so affectionately noted by Vasari, injects a quiet warmth and everyday intimacy that elevates the sacred scene without diminishing its dignity. Rich, vibrant colour and refined modelling complete the effect: a painting that perfectly balances Renaissance elegance with emerging Mannerist vitality. It remains one of Romano’s most charming and enduring achievements.
