Madonna and Child

A famous Italian Baroque painter, Carlo Dolci was born on 1616 in Florence, Italy. He was known for his highly finished religious pictures, his devotion, and considered the most important Florentine painter of the 17th century. He got his artistic skill from his maternal grandfather, who had also worked as a painter in his time. In 1925, he entered the studio of Jacopo Vignali for further studies. Beyond Vignali, he was strongly influrnced by the court painter Agnolo Bronzino and likely learned neterlandish style as well. Regardless of these influences and models, Dolci developed his own individual painting style which shows sober and static traditions of his home. In 1648, he became a member of Academia del Disegno and received many commissions. The painting, "Madonna and Child" is created around 1650s by Carlo Dolci. This painting shows that the Virgin Mary is holding Christ child on her knee and the child looks straightly which makes the scene look more intense and engaging. The Christ child is wrapped in a white dress, has fair skin, thick curly blonde hair, taking his first steps, and is raising his hand to bless the person looking at the picture. Virgin Mary is in a red dress, shiny blue cloak, and the golden haloes aroung the head of the figures gives the painting a refined style which is typical of this artist. She turned slightly so that she could lovingly look at his son. The artist cleverly used the light to make the skin of both the figures look more smooth and delicate which stands out from the neutral background. He drew some details very carefully like, the hands of the Mary and the shadow on her face and neck which shows that he was greatly influenced by Jacopo Vignali and Cristofano Allori. This can easily be seen in the figures of the painting which look lifelike and realistic. The artist used very smooth and careful brushstrokes. He used bright colors, soft skin colors and golden highlights to make painting look realistic and beautiful.
