Lovers by the Sea presents an intimate scene of two figures placed against a coastal landscape. The composition is simple and focuses attention on the relationship between the human figures and their natural surroundings. The sea and open landscape create a sense of space, while the small scale of the figures makes them appear closely connected to the environment. Baij uses watercolour with touches of bodycolour, allowing the surface of the paper to remain important to the overall appearance of the work. The relatively loose handling of the medium gives the scene a spontaneous and atmospheric quality. The painting can be interpreted as a quiet representation of companionship and intimacy. Rather than presenting the lovers through elaborate details or dramatic gestures, Baij appears to place them within the larger landscape, making nature an important part of the emotional setting. The sea may also suggest freedom, distance and the changing nature of human relationships. The simplicity of the composition gives the work a contemplative quality, with the natural surroundings providing a peaceful setting for the figures. As an early work from 1923, Lovers by the Sea is also significant for understanding Baij’s development as an artist. His later work became strongly associated with modernist experimentation, human figures, rural life and the rhythms of nature. This early painting already shows an interest in ordinary human experience and the relationship between people and their surroundings. Thus, the work can be viewed not simply as a romantic scene, but as an early example of Baij’s developing interest in human emotion expressed through landscape.
