Lion attacking a hunter

Artist:Nanha
Support Type: Silk
Paint Type: Gouache
Current Location: Free Library of Philadelphia (John Frederick Lewis Collection), Call number / Accession: Lewis M 36
Location History:Created c. 1615 in Mughal India by Nanha. Acquired by collector John Frederick Lewis (1860–1932). Gifted by his widow Anne Baker Lewis to the Free Library of Philadelphia in 1933, where it remains (Lewis M 36).

Overall, I interpret Perils of the Hunt as a representation of human vulnerability in the face of nature. Rather than portraying hunting simply as an achievement of human courage, Nanha reminds the viewer that the natural world possesses its own power and agency. The painting can therefore be seen as a dramatic meditation on power, danger, survival, and the fragile boundary between the hunter and the hunted.
