Lilac

Lilac, also known simply as Blooming Lilacs, is one of Kiriak Kostandi’s signature works created in 1902. This artwork is the perfect blend of the late nineteenth century's realism and Impressionist features. This oil painting depicts an intimate genre scene in a peaceful sun-lit landscape in southern Ukraine. A flowering lilac bush takes the center-stage and this shrub is illuminated by sun-light making shadows on the grass. In the backdrop of the bush, we can see a modest figure sitting at a rustic garden-gate and a church tower looming in the distance against the backdrop of a delicate sky. The artist uses a masterful technique of playing with sunlight and different colors in his paintings. The paintings do not resort to any dramatic narrative device but helps the viewer get transported to a peaceful moment of time. Kostandi is a famous figure of the Society of South Russian Artists and his association with the Peredvizhniki movement made him successful in plein-air painting and small genre work. The painting, called Lilac, is characterized by Kostandi’s ability to use brush strokes which evoke not only feelings but also sensations. The painting combines rich greenery and wise human contemplation, thus embodying Kostandi’s idea of the poetical side of ordinary rural life. Presently, the painting is among the most popular works of the artist and it has become part of the collection of the Odesa Fine Arts Museum, Ukraine.
