Binode Behari Mukherjee’s monumental fresco buono mural, "Life of Medieval Saints" (1946–47), permanently gracing the walls of the Hindi Bhavana library at Santiniketan, stands as a pioneering masterpiece of Indian Contextual Modernism. Spanning nearly 23 meters, the artwork seamlessly integrates revered Bhakti saint-poets like Kabir and Tulsidas into the bustling, dense choreography of ordinary village life, beautifully transforming mundane human labor into a collective spiritual pilgrimage. Rejecting traditional mythological idealism, Mukherjee utilizes a rhythmic, tapestry-like network of minimal calligraphic lines to connect common folk engaged in everyday vocations. This fluid, linear narrative brilliantly synthesizes the spatial structural integrity of early Italian Renaissance frescoes with the sweeping formatting of East Asian handscrolls, all while drawing physical weight and volume from ancient Pallava reliefs and Chola bronzes. Remarkably executed without preliminary sketches, relying entirely on the artist's inner tactile vision despite his severe visual impairment, this earth-toned, syncretic mural remains a profound philosophical testament to India’s shared cultural and spiritual heritage.
Mukherjee’s “Life of Medieval Saints” is a classic example of mural art in modern India. Based on the tradition of Nandalal Bose, the painting shows simple lines and rhythmic tapestry-like composition, which is a very witty tribute to the craft traditions of the saints. What is interesting, the painting was created through the power of Mukherjee’s tactile senses and intuition, in spite of his poor eyesight. Using the images of key personalities from Bhakti and Sufi religious movements, Mukherjee presents India’s unique syncretism and spirituality.
