Last Judgment

Support Type: Wall / Plaster
Paint Type: Fresco
Current Location: Cappella Sistina, Vatican
Location History:The Last Judgment has remained on the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City since Michelangelo completed it in 1541. It replaced earlier 15th-century frescoes on the wall and was commissioned under Pope Clement VII and Pope Paul III. The work has remained in its original location and underwent extensive restoration between 1979 and 1994 to recover Michelangelo’s original colours and details.

'Last Judgement' by Michelangelo, is a landmark work in art history itself, due to its cultural and spiritual significance. Though it adapts a biblical story, it takes an entirely humanistic approach while doing so, as seen in the designs and expressions for the Virgin Mary and the Saints, and the references to Dante. Rather than just put the biblical story into it as it is, in 'Last Judgement', Michelangelo put the 'human' into the Bible instead.
