This 1667 landscape album offers a profound, liminal glimpse into the artistic evolution of Yun Shouping, executed well before his historical canonisation as Qing China’s premier master of "boneless" flower painting. Created when Yun was just thirty-four, this ten-leaf compilation serves not merely as an exercise in traditional stylistic emulation (fang), but as a psychological blueprint of a deeply principled scholar-artist navigating the anxieties of influence. By juxtaposing the turbulent, monumental density of Wang Meng with the austere, meditative restraint of Cao Zhibo, Yun demonstrates an extraordinary breadth of formal vocabulary. Yet, beneath these stylistic diversions lies a singular, unifying sensibility. The meticulous control of his brushwork and the deliberate clarity of his compositions do not mimic his precursors so much as they mirror Yun's own interior landscape one defined by Confucian rectitude and an innate poetic reserve. This youthful virtuosity takes on a poignant resonance when viewed alongside his celebrated decision to yield the realm of landscape painting to his peerless contemporary, Wang Hui. Rather than a historical footnote, this album represents a vital artistic crossroads. The precise, understated delicacy that would later define his luminous botanical works is already entirely manifest here; it is merely channeled into the skeletal architectures of stone, branch, and peak. It stands as a brilliant testament to a major artist’s latent potential, preserving the ghost of the landscape painter Yun Shouping ultimately chose not to become.
