Landscape was painted by Aoki Mokubei around 1810 during Japan's Edo period. The hanging scroll remained in Japan and was owned by Matsumoto Kikuo of Kyoto before 2009. In 2009, it was acquired by collector James Freeman in Bangkok, Thailand. The Walters Art Museum purchased the painting in 2013, and it is now preserved in the museum's permanent collection in Baltimore, Maryland.
Landscape is a fine example Aoki Mokubei's contribution to the Nanga (Bunjinga) school of Japanese painting, which emphasized scholarly ideals, poetic imagination and a deep appreciation of nature.
