Lamentation over the Dead Christ

"Lamentación de Cristo Muerto" by Spanish artist Antonio de Santander, a recognized painter who in his early-stages of his life often travelled to the New Spain, specially Puebla, a state in which he became a renowned artist and his art can be found in some of the most important churches in the city. The painting depicts the moment after the descent of the body of Jesus from the cross, in addition to the representation of the Queen of Heavens Virgin Mary, who can be found crying the body of her child along with other devotees before being buried. The composition of the painting centers around Christ's body, which takes most of the lower side of the artwork, in front of the body different tools can be recognized: a hammer, metal nails and the crown of thorns, which Christ wore during the crucifixion. Behind him, the desperation in the faces of the figures surrounding him is evident, specially Virgin Mary, who is looking straight towards Heaven, seeking for a sign. On the right side of the painting two angels can be seen, easily recognized by their wings seeking to take Christs hand and looking directly him. On the upper side of the painting the sky tinted by a purple hue is presented, filled with angels hidden among the clouds, who witnessed the heart-wrenching scene.
