Milan Central Station in 1889 (La stazione centrale di Milano nel 1889)

Support Type: Canvas
Paint Type: Oil Paint
Current Location: Galleria d\'Arte Moderna (GAM), Milano, Italia

Looking at this painting I'm transported to a quieter Milan, one that is not overflowing with strangers in constant movement. The soft and warm colours provide a sort of intimacy, a feeling of peace and stillness. The arrival of the steam locomotives intro the station (from both the ends) seems to be a symbol of the arrival of an industrial era. The people seem characteristically well-off, clad in polished clothes. This reflects the society of that time, where people with wealth could afford to use the locomotives for inter-city and long distance travel, while the urbane, working class would use electric trams and horse carts.
