Augustin Arrieta was a 19th century Mexican Painter specializing in the genre of Costumbrista painting in the oil medium; Costumbrismo or Costumbrista is an art movement that gained traction during the 18th and 19th centuries in colonial Mexico, which aimed to purport racial hierarchies and subjugation of minorities to the masses of Mexico. Arrieta studied at the fine arts academy in Puebla, a small town where he spent most of his life after shifting there in his childhood from his hometown, Chiautempan. Arrieta's oeuvre comprises paintings portraying the daily life and customs of the Mexican people, still life's, portraits and a few religious artworks as well. La Sorpreza or The Surprise is a typical example of the Costumbrismo painting tradition, capturing a domestic or social moment centered around an unexpected interaction, emphasizing gesture, expression and interpersonal tension. In essence, La Sorpreza exemplifies Arrieta's mastery of genre painting by combining realism, covert narratives and extraordinary material detail to celebrate the everyday Mexican experience. His paintings often reveal subtle class dynamics and showcase the coexistence of the wealthy and the poor.
