In the painting "Krishna Fluting to the Milkmaids", Krishna plays his bamboo bansuri ( flute ) in a lush grove, drawing the gopis ( milkmaids ) from Vrindavan to the forest by moonlight. His hypnotic music symbolises a divine call that awakens spiritual longing in the soul. The milkmaid's infatuation with Krishna represents Bhakti - unconditional devotion - where the human soul yearns for union with the supreme deity. The scene often depicts the rasa lila ( the dance of delight ) where Krishna miraculously multiplies himself to dance with each milkmaid individually. This signifies God's personal presence for every devotee. The painting embodies ecstacy, surrender and the mystical union of earthly and divine love with nature itself echoing the theme of devotion.
